The Orioles appear to be preparing for life after Manny Machado.

According to information from Sean Sears of Sports Mockery, the Baltimore team has shown interest in the Chicago Cubs' Puerto Rican infielder Javier Báez.

According to Sears, the Orioles are looking for a power-hitter who can play shortstop and third base.

The Baltimore organization learned that the Cubs were interested in moving Baez and other pieces to get pitching and approached to ask about the utility.

Orioles that have one of the best closers in baseball in Zach Britton, could trade the left-hander and someone like Kevin Gausman for the Puerto Rican.

Many had thought that Happ would be the most looked at of the pieces they have dangled in the market in Baez, Ian Happ and Ben Zobrist.

Machado will become a free agent at the end of the next season and is expected to get a big contract looking complicated to re-sign with the Orioles.

Báez finished last season batting .273 with 23 homers, 75 RBIs and 75 runs scored in a total of 135 games.

Baez is under club control until after the 2021 season, league minimum for 2018 and arbitration for the next three seasons.
