Bryce Harper will be a free agent after next season and fans of the Nationals are already worried about losing their biggest star.
Jamal Collier of MLB.com explains that many fans of the Nationals have serious doubt that the team can extend or sign Harper to a new deal and should instead trade the 2015 MVP now or during the season so that they are not left empty-handed.
But, Collier explains that the Nationals are a favorite to not only make the playoffs but to win the NL East Division with Harper leading the charge in another attempt to win the World Series,
Collier also explains that Washington would not be able to get the sufficient value for Harper, especially because teams will not give up their best prospects for a rental that will most likely leave after the season is done.
The only way the team would really think of trading Harper is if they are completely out of the playoff race by the All-Star break, which seems unlikely with a staff anchored by Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Gio Gonzalez. As well as All-Star caliber position players.
Collier ends with the following comment:
"The Nationals are going to try to win with Harper next season and they are going to try to re-sign him."
In his six major league seasons, all with the Nationals, Harper has a total of 150 homers, 481 runs batted in and a .285 average in 768 games played.
