The best basketball player in the world, smack in the prime of his career, abruptly announces that he's retiring -- to pursue a career in professional baseball. If that story sounds like it might make for a compelling movie, you're in luck.

According to a report from The Tracking Board, Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, has picked up a script about Michael Jordan's year with the Double-A Birmingham Barons.

The screenplay, written by Ben Epstein and currently titled "The Prospect," made it onto the 2017 Black List -- a compilation of the best-unproduced scripts of the year, as voted on by Hollywood executives.

While Jordan struggled as a baseball player, hitting just .202 with three homers in his one season with Birmingham, he was still a national sensation, with fans coming from far and wide just to get a glimpse of him:

No one knows just who will play MJ in the film -- Smith is currently 49 years old, 18 years older than Jordan when he signed with the Barons -- but there is one nominatively appropriate choice.

ESPN has already told the story from an outside perspective with its 30 for 30 film, Jordan rides the bus.
