The Marlins off-season keeps getting worse and worse this winter, now another of its players has asked for a trade to leave the team. A person familiar with the situation says Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto has requested a trade in the wake of the team’s latest payroll purge.

The person confirmed the request to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the Marlins didn’t comment.

SiriusXM's Craig Mish was the first to report the request by Realmuto.

>

This month the Marlins have traded major league home run champion Giancarlo Stanton, All-Star left fielder Marcell Ozuna and major league stolen base champ Dee Gordon as the franchise reduces payroll and rebuilds under a new ownership group that includes Derek Jeter.

The Marlins catcher is one of the better young catchers at this moment, Mish even calls him the best, and he would be a very good trading chip for the Marlins in their quest to rebuild the team.

>

Realmuto hit .278 with 17 homers this year and is regarded as one of the best young catchers in the majors and is under team control for three more years.

>

He is eligible for arbitration for the first time and can become a free agent after the 2020 season.

Realmuto has great value and will probably fetch a good haul for the Marlins, but it might take a while since it seems Christian Yelich will be first on the trading block.
