Orioles sign Gausman and avoid arbitration

Baltimore announced this Tuesday that they avoided arbitration with pitcher Kevin Gausman and agreed with him a 1 year-long contract for the next season.

According to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun, Gausman will earn $5.6 million this season, which is a $2 M raise from his previous contract, which was worth $3.45 M last season.

Also, according to Bob Nigthengale of USA Today, the deal contains a performance bonus of $150 K.

The arbitration hearing was scheduled for Wednesday prior to the agreement. Gausman had asked for $6.25 M, and Baltimore had countered at $5.3 M.

During the 2017 season, the 27 year-old pitcher registered a 11-12, with a 4.68 ERA through 34 starts. He led the Orioles in strikeouts (179) and innings pitched (186 2/3).
