While the top free agents available this offseason are beginning to sign, there's still one that remains without a deal, and that's Jake Arrieta, who is still looking for a contract.
Phillies and Jake Arrieta are having dialogue. Phils people (MacPhail, Klentak, Jordan, etc.) love him from their days in Baltimore together. Phils would prefer shorter term tho, so there’s a gap.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) February 20, 2018
But according to Jon Heyman of FanRagSports, this could change very soon, as he reports that the Phillies are in talks with the 2015 Cy Young winner over a possible contract.
Heyman explains that the now Phillies directive formerly worked with Arrieta while both parts were at the Baltimore Orioles, as the directives know the pitcher really well, and this could be an important incentive for Arrieta to go to Philadelphia.
However, the Phillies are interested in a short-term deal, meanwhile Arrieta and his agent, Scott Boras, reportedly want a 6 year-long contract and $160 million. But as seen in this offseason, is very unlikely, if not impossible, that the 31-year-old can get the contract he wants.
During 2017 season, Arrieta had a record of 14-10 during 30 games started, with an ERA of 3.53 and notching 163 K's.
