Looks like one of the St. Louis Cardinals key pieces of their pitching staff will not be able to start the season fully fit, as veteran Adam Wainright will be in the disabled list for the Opening Day due to a hamstring injury.

According to numerous reports, Cards' manager Mike Matheny informed this decision after the 36-year-old pitcher was scratched from the line up before a Spring Training start against the Washington Nationals this Sunday.

Matheny also informed that Wainwright's place in the rotation will be filled by the rookie pitcher Jack Flaherty, according to Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The rookie made his MLB debut last September, completing 5 starts and one relief, notching a 6.33 ERA.

It is unclear how long will Wainwright will be sidelined by his injury. The pitcher had a decent 2017 season, as he ended up with a 12-5 record, over 24 games. He struck out 94 batters and recorded a not so great 5.11 ERA
