Previous reports stated that Girardi was also one of the main candidates to become the next manager of the Cincinnati Reds, along with Jim Riggleman, who was the interim manager of the team during the 2018 season, after Cincinnati fired Bryan Price.
Girardi last managed in 2017, as that was his last season as the Yankees skipper and reached the ALCS, losing to the eventual World Series champions, the Houston Astros. Girardi arrived in New York in 2008 and won the Fall Classic during his second season as a manager.
