The final four teams in this year's postseason field are now set.
Boston joined the Astros, Brewers and Dodgers in the League Championship round Tuesday, enduring a late rally by the Yankees for a 4-3 victory in Game 4 of the AL Division Series.
The top-seeded Red Sox advance to face the defending champion Astros in the ALCS, beginning Saturday at Fenway Park. In the National League, the Dodgers and Brewers open the NLCS in Milwaukee on Friday.
Here is a full breakdown of where things stand, with key dates for the LCS and World Series, as well as a complete breakdown of home-field advantage through the Fall Classic.
NL Championship Series (2-3-2 format): Dodgers vs. Brewers
Game 1 is Friday on FS1, 8:09 p.m. ET
Home-field advantage in this best-of-seven series (Games 1-2 and 6-7) goes to the Division Series winner with the higher regular-season winning percentage, but never a Wild Card team. That will be Milwaukee, which finished the regular season as the NL's top seed after defeating the Cubs in a one-game tiebreaker to win the Central. The Brewers, who have won 11 straight games dating back to the regular season, swept the Rockies in the NLDS to advance, while the Dodgers bested the Braves in four games.
This is the first postseason meeting between Los Angeles and Milwaukee. Los Angeles won the regular season series, 4-3.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 for the Dodgers. The Brewers have yet to name a starter, but they will presumably turn to Jhoulys Chacin, who hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in his past dozen starts, including five scoreless frames in Game 2 of the NLDS. Chacin hasn't fared as well against LA, however. He's posted a 4.41 ERA through 26 games (25 starts) and was tagged for nine runs (eight earned) on five hits (three homers) and four walks when he faced the Dodgers on Aug. 2 at Chavez Ravine.
Kershaw owns a 2.86 ERA in 14 career starts against Milwaukee. He held them to three earned runs in 12 innings across two starts in the regular season. The left-hander pitched eight shutout innings in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Braves.
The Brewers are in the playoffs for the first time since 2011, and this is their third trip to the LCS round. They defeated the Angels in five games in the 1982 ALCS, then lost to the Cardinals in six games in 2011. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have won six straight division crowns and advanced to the NLCS in all but two of those seasons. Last year, they beat the Cubs in five games before losing the World Series to the Astros. Two years ago, the Dodgers lost the NLCS to the eventual World Series champion Cubs.
AL Championship Series (2-3-2 format): Red Sox vs. Astros
Game 1 is Saturday on TBS, 8:09 p.m. ET
This year's ALCS is a rematch of last year's ALDS, which Houston won in four games en route to the franchise's first title. Home-field advantage in this best-of-seven series (Games 1-2 and 6-7) goes the Division Series winner with the higher regular-season winning percentage, but never a Wild Card team. That's the Red Sox, who won an MLB-best 108 games in the regular season.
This marks the 23rd time since the Wild Card era began in 1995 that teams have met in the playoffs in consecutive years. It's the fifth for the Red Sox -- first since they faced the Angels in three straight years from 2007-09 -- and the third for the Astros. Houston last did it in 2004-05, when they took on the Braves and Cardinals in back-to-back seasons while in the NL. The last time two teams that met in the DS rematched a year later in the LCS was when the Tigers and Yankees did it in 2011-12.
The Astros, who swept the Indians in the ALDS, are the first AL team since the 2010 Yankees to make it back to the LCS in the year following a World Series title. The Red Sox are back in the ALCS for the first time since their 2013 title run. They lost in the ALDS in each of the last two seasons.
This series marks a reunion for Boston manager Alex Cora, who was the Astros bench coach when they knocked out the Red Sox in the playoffs last season en route to the World Series. Houston won the season series between these clubs, 4-3.
